🌸 Introducing My First Period — A Guide to Understanding, Confidence, and Care
EthVida, in collaboration with Sparkle Magazine, a Pakistan-based production company committed to philanthropic and non-profit initiatives, has developed My First Period—a children’s educational book focused on menstrual health literacy, dignity, and empowerment.
Now published and available on Amazon:
📚 My First Period has been created to support communities where access to formal sex education is limited or absent. The book provides age-appropriate, culturally sensitive guidance grounded in medical knowledge, helping young girls understand what a healthy menstrual cycle can look like, how to recognise potential health concerns, and when to seek appropriate support.
A defining feature of the book is the inclusion of 21 women’s real-life menstrual health experiences, representing a wide range of lived realities. These narratives explore both typical cycles and conditions such as PCOS, PMDD, and endometriosis—helping to normalise variation and reinforce that menstrual pain or distress should never be dismissed or endured in silence.
💬 This work is also deeply personal. As someone living with PCOS, my own experience is included within the book. Like many women, I was told—by both healthcare professionals and others—that painful periods are “normal” and something to simply accept. This narrative has contributed to generations of women feeling unheard, delaying diagnosis, and normalising discomfort. It is a conversation that must change.

Beyond biological education, My First Period addresses wider social and cultural challenges, including menstrual stigma, period shame, and safety risks faced by girls in developing communities. It also challenges harmful narratives—such as equating menstruation with readiness for marriage—and instead advocates for autonomy, protection, and informed choice.
The content has been medically reviewed by a holistic health nurse to ensure accuracy and integrity.
🌍 At its core, this book is part of a wider mission. We are committed to improving access to menstrual health education globally—supporting young girls, educating women who may not have received accurate information, and encouraging greater awareness among men, where understanding of women’s health remains limited.
Our aim is to see resources such as My First Period introduced into primary education settings, ensuring that every girl has access to clear, supportive, and accurate information from an early age.
